Removing The Power From Your Fears
We ALL are scared of something. Focusing on the good in things doesn't always work! Gratitude is such a powerful tool but many time's our fears can be more powerful. If this weren't the truth, then everyone would be out there living their dreams with a huge smile on their faces, right?! Looking at the bright side of things can be almost torturous at times... especially when the tiny voice in the back of our head is holding us back.
Here's a 2-step way that you can remove the power that this tiny voice has, and refocus your outlook on the good (without it feeling forced).
1. Ask yourself what it would really look like if these fears played out. Would you be ok? Envision what it would be like if you lost it all. Would you be ok? How would you make it through if the worst case scenario actually happened? Would you freeze up or figure out how to move through?
Often times, we give our fears too much power over us. The fact of the matter is, even if our backs were up against a wall and these fears came to life, we are more resilient than we give ourselves credit for. Would we let ourselves rot? Probably not. Would we give up? I sure wouldn't. Would you pick yourself up and be stronger from the challenge? I'm guessing the answer is, yes. Now, go forward knowing that you are stronger than your fears.
A quote from Oliver Burkeman: "Confronting the worst-case scenario saps it of much of its anxiety-inducing power. Happiness reached via positive thinking can be fleeting and brittle, negative visualization generates a vastly more dependable calm."
2. Think of something that you have in your life that you're having trouble feeling grateful for or something that you maybe take for granted. How has this thing changed your life? What affects has this caused in you... good and bad? How will you choose to grow from it? How would life be different if it were to go away? This is an exercise in Negative visualization... many times it's not until something is gone that we appreciate it most. Try it out!
